Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica) is a hardy botanical with a long history in traditional European herbalism. Often found growing along roadsides, fields, and woodland edges, nettle is one of those plants that has been valued for generations as both a traditional food and an herbal staple.
Nettle is particularly appreciated for its naturally mineral-rich leaves. Once dried, the leaves can be prepared as a simple herbal infusion with an earthy, green, pleasantly grassy flavor. Its naturally occurring plant compounds and minerals are part of what has made nettle such a valued botanical in traditional herbal practices.
Nettle leaf has also been traditionally enjoyed during seasonal changes and incorporated into herbal preparations for everyday respiratory and sinus comfort. Today, it remains a popular choice for herbalists looking to build a versatile home apothecary and create seasonal tea blends.
Nettle's flavor pairs beautifully with other herbs, especially peppermint, spearmint, lemon balm, elderflower, and ginger. It can be enjoyed as a simple single-herb infusion or combined with other botanicals to create a more complex and aromatic cup.*
Laura’s Herbalist Notes
Nettle leaf is one of those herbs I always like to have in my home apothecary. It may not be the most glamorous plant in the garden, but it is incredibly versatile and has such a long history of traditional use.
One of the things I appreciate most about nettle is that it is naturally mineral-rich. There is something wonderfully grounding about working with a plant that has traditionally been valued as a nourishing botanical, and nettle has earned its place as a classic herbal staple for good reason.
When brewed, nettle leaf has a distinctly green, earthy flavor with a mild grassy quality. I especially enjoy blending it with brighter herbs like peppermint or spearmint, or softer herbs like lemon balm, which complement its naturally deep herbal character.
Nettle is also one of the herbs I think of during seasonal changes. Traditionally, herbalists have incorporated nettle into seasonal preparations and teas enjoyed for everyday respiratory and sinus comfort.
For me, nettle is a perfect example of what I love about herbalism: an unassuming plant with a fascinating history, a naturally rich botanical profile, and so many simple ways to bring it into everyday tea rituals.
