Stevia Leaf (Stevia rebaudiana) is a small herb native to South America, where its naturally sweet leaves have been used traditionally for generations. The plant belongs to the Asteraceae family and is now cultivated in many parts of the world for its distinctive sweetness.
The leaves contain naturally occurring sweet compounds called steviol glycosides, which are responsible for stevia's characteristic sweet taste. When using the whole dried leaf, you experience not only its sweetness but also the subtle herbal notes that make the plant unique.
Stevia leaf can be used in a variety of everyday herbal preparations. A small amount can be added to tea blends to complement herbs with naturally bitter, tart, or earthy flavors. It pairs particularly well with mint, lemon balm, hibiscus, ginger, and citrus-forward botanicals.
Because whole stevia leaf has such a concentrated sweetness, a little goes a long way. It is a wonderful botanical to keep on hand when creating your own custom tea blends and experimenting with naturally sweet herbal flavors.*
Laura’s Herbalist Notes
Stevia is one of those herbs that always surprises people the first time they experience the actual leaf. Most people know stevia as a sweetener, but I love introducing people to the plant itself and letting them experience where that sweetness comes from.
The leaves have an unmistakably sweet flavor, but whole stevia leaf is more complex than sweetness alone. There is a subtle green, herbal quality underneath it that gives it a personality of its own.
One of my favorite ways to use stevia is in tea blending. It can beautifully balance herbs that have a naturally tart, bitter, or earthy flavor. I especially love pairing it with hibiscus, peppermint, lemon balm, ginger, and citrusy herbs.
Stevia also makes a wonderful addition to a home apothecary because it gives you the freedom to experiment with your own blends. A tiny amount can change the entire character of a cup, making it a fun botanical to reach for when you're creating something of your own.
