St. John’s wort (Hypericum perforatum) has long been regarded as a companion to the nervous system, a flowering herb traditionally linked with emotional steadiness and inner clarity. Its bright yellow blossoms, gathered around midsummer, have symbolized vitality and balance throughout European herbal traditions.

Modern research has examined St. John’s wort for its distinctive profile of bioactive compounds, including hypericin, hyperforin, and a range of flavonoids. These constituents have been studied for their interactions with neurotransmitter pathways, offering insight into the herb’s long‑standing use in supporting healthy mood regulation and mental focus.

Herbalists often turn to St. John’s wort during periods of heightened mental strain or seasonal change, when emotional resilience may feel diminished. Rather than acting as a stimulant, it is traditionally understood as a harmonizing plant that supports steady alertness and nervous system equilibrium.

Prepared as a tea, St. John’s wort offers a lightly bitter, green, sun‑warmed flavor that reflects its energetic qualities. It has been used to encourage emotional balance, steady the mind, and support a sense of wellbeing during times of transition or low light.

Beyond its physiological role, St. John’s wort carries deep folkloric significance. Often referred to as a plant of light, it has been associated with protection, renewal, and the restoration of inner harmony, believed to guide the spirit back toward balance in a measured, supportive way.*

Laura's Herbalist Notes

The folklore around this plant runs deep and a little wild. In medieval Europe, it was gathered on St. John's Eve (June 23rd, the night before the feast day it's named for) and thrown into midsummer bonfires, hung over doorways, tucked under pillows, and woven into crowns. The Greeks called it hypericon, meaning "over an apparition," believing it could chase away restless spirits and bad dreams. Some of its old country names, "chase-devil" and "fuga daemonum" (devil's flight), tell you everything you need to know about how our ancestors felt about it. It was the herb you reached for when the world felt heavy.

A few things worth knowing before you work with it. St. John's Wort is a sensitive soul. It doesn't play well with a lot of pharmaceuticals, including antidepressants, birth control, and blood thinners. If you take daily medication, check with your practitioner before using it internally. It's also photosensitizing, meaning it can make your skin more reactive to sunlight. If I'm using an infused oil, I always use it in the evening, or on skin that stays covered.

My favorite way to work with it is seasonally. Summer solstice is the perfect time to make an infused oil, when the plant is at its most luminous. I also like to sip it as a warm cup of tea around the new moon when I'm setting intentions for the weeks ahead. It's a plant that holds light, and I think we could all use a little more of that.
