Peppermint leaf (Mentha piperita) is a naturally occurring hybrid of spearmint and watermint, first cultivated for its sharper, more invigorating character. Its mint relatives were part of Greek and Roman herbal practice, where they were appreciated for their ability to awaken the senses and support the body during moments of strain.

With its cooling nature and high menthol content, peppermint has traveled across centuries and cultures to become one of the most beloved herbs in the world. In modern herbalism, it is valued for supporting digestive comfort, easing occasional tension, and encouraging clear, easy breathing. Its unmistakable aroma has also been studied for its uplifting influence on mood, offering a refreshing clarity that feels as timeless as the plant itself.

Peppermint’s bright, revitalizing flavor has made it a staple in teas, tinctures, and culinary traditions across Europe, the Middle East, and North America. A cup of peppermint tea after a meal, or a cool infusion on a warm day, has long been a simple ritual of comfort and renewed energy.

Today, peppermint continues to bridge ancient tradition and modern herbal understanding, offering steady support for both body and mind while delighting the senses with its crisp, invigorating presence.*

Laura's Herbalist Notes

Peppermint got its name from its flavor. When the English botanist John Ray first described it in 1696, he called it Pepper-Mint, after its hot, peppery bite. By the mid-1700s, whole fields of it were growing in Mitcham, just outside London, and it wasn't long before the rest of the world caught on.

I love the old Greek story behind mint. The river nymph Minthe caught the eye of Hades, and in a fit of jealousy, Persephone turned her into a low-growing plant. Hades couldn't undo it, so he gave her a sweet scent instead. I think of her every time I brush past a mint plant and that fragrance rises up.

Here's something most people don't know: peppermint rarely makes viable seed. Instead, it spreads by runners and is grown from cuttings and roots, so nearly every peppermint plant you'll ever meet is a cutting of a cutting, passed along from garden to garden for generations.
