Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum), commonly known as Tulsi, is an aromatic member of the mint family native to the Indian subcontinent. It has been cultivated and cherished in India for centuries and holds an important place in traditional Ayurvedic herbalism.
Tulsi is known for its naturally fragrant leaves and distinctive flavor, which can range from warm and peppery to slightly clove-like and sweet. Different varieties of Tulsi can have their own unique aromatic profiles, making the whole dried herb an especially interesting botanical for tea blending.
In traditional herbalism, Tulsi has long been valued as a daily wellness herb and is traditionally used in preparations intended to support the body's ability to adapt to everyday physical and emotional stressors. Its long history of use is one reason it remains such a beloved herb in traditional Ayurvedic practice.
Holy Basil makes a wonderful addition to everyday herbal preparations. It can be enjoyed as a simple herbal infusion or combined with other botanicals to create flavorful, aromatic tea blends. It pairs particularly well with ginger, lemon balm, peppermint, rose, cinnamon, cardamom, and other warming or aromatic herbs.*
Laura’s Herbalist Notes
Holy Basil, or Tulsi, has been cherished in India for generations, and when you open a bag of good-quality Tulsi, you immediately understand part of its appeal. The aroma is warm, spicy, slightly clove-like, and incredibly distinctive.
I especially love Tulsi as an everyday tea herb. In traditional Ayurvedic herbalism, Tulsi has long been valued as a botanical for helping the body adapt to the everyday stresses of life, which is one of the reasons it has such an important place in daily herbal traditions.
From an herbalist’s perspective, I also appreciate how versatile Tulsi is. It has enough character to stand on its own as a simple tea, but it blends beautifully with so many other herbs. I especially love pairing it with ginger, lemon balm, peppermint, rose, cinnamon, and cardamom.
